Casting and creation [edit]
Extra Hunter Tylo originated the function of Taylor, portraying the character for iii decades; from 1990 until her deviation in 2019.
Bear witness creator William J. Bell introduced the role of psychiatrist Dr. Taylor Hamilton Hayes, played past actress Hunter Tylo, during the episode dated June six, 1990.[three] According to Variety, Bell created Taylor as "a romantic leading lady but also as a character who could facilitate social issues — and straight partake in a few, too".[4] Previously, Tylo was dismissed from 2 other soaps, All My Children and Days of Our Lives. The extra noted that her "crazy sense of humor" and "funny business" could accept won her the function of Taylor, and she said: "Afterward the audition, they told me I was the just one correct for the office. I retrieve they liked my 'a woman'due south gotta do what a woman's gotta practise' mental attitude."[5] Sherilyn Wolter temporarily replaced Tylo in 1990.[vi] Tylo vacated the role in May 1994 to pursue other projects,[7] but the soap opera left the door open up for her to return,[8] which she did months later. During her absenteeism, the character was presumed to exist dead.[9] In March 1996, post-obit Taylor's decreased airtime and rumors circulating of her go out, it was confirmed that the extra was to go out The Bold and the Cute after her contract expired that June, to pursue a primetime function on the Fox tv drama Melrose Place.[x] Taylor'due south final appearance was in May 1996.[11] Nevertheless, in July 1996, Tylo was controversially fired from Melrose Place on the grounds of beingness pregnant and was replaced by Lisa Rinna. In response, she sued that prove's executive producer Aaron Spelling and Spelling Productions for millions of US dollars, and won her instance.[12] It was immediately reported that she would render to The Assuming and the Beautiful, with head author and executive producer Bradley Bell issuing the statement: "I am certain that Hunter's talent and power will go on to be an asset to the show."[eleven]
In October 2001, reports surfaced that Tylo was to go out the series again following unsuccessful contract negotiations,[xiii] [14] although two months later in December she signed a new contract which gave her more flexibility to pursue other projects.[xv] In October 2002, Bradley Bell killed off the character and Tylo's terminal appearance was on October thirty, 2002.[16] In March 2004, she made a multiple-episode guest advent as Taylor's ghost.[17] Following this, she told Soaps in Depth that "I knew it my heart I would not exist going back", stating that she wanted to "let the character go". During her fourth dimension off the testify, she had turned down offers to appear on other soaps including As the World Turns.[18] In 2005, Deanna Barnert of Soap Opera Digest wrote that according to an industry insider, a character from the prove "may come up dorsum from the globe of the beyond", leading fans to speculate whether either Macy Alexander (Bobbie Eakes) or Taylor would be returning.[xix] Taylor was revealed to be alive, with Tylo returning on-screen during the Apr 25, 2005, episode.[20] She was said to be "having fun surprising her castmates" with her reappearance on set.[nineteen] The bear witness'southward producers wanted to go along her on-screen return a cloak-and-dagger, with Tylo wearing a wig when travelling to the prepare, and the character'southward proper noun being changed on scripts.[nineteen]
In May 2013, Tylo announced online that she was exiting the soap, peradventure for good.[21] In a postal service on her website, she wrote: "For me, contract talks ended 4 weeks ago", adding "My friends and B&B fans will be sorely missed."[22] Tylo's last appearance aired on her birthday: July 3, 2013. Dan Kroll of the website Lather Primal was shocked by her leave, though felt that a future render was possible, judging from her previous departures.[23] The news of Tylo's exit came only months after the high-contour departures of Ronn Moss and Susan Flannery from the series.[23] Tylo has since returned to The Bold and the Beautiful for a number of guest appearances. She made a one-episode appearance which aired on February 28, 2014.[24] [25] The extra then made several guest appearances in Apr and May 2014, for a May sweeps story arc which revisited Taylor's accidental killing of Darla years earlier, with Darla's now teen girl Aly (Ashlyn Pearce) struggling to deal with the issue of her mother's death.[26] Tylo appeared again on November 5, 12 and 24, 2014.[27] Tylo made a surprise return to The Bold and the Beautiful during the final moments of the Apr 12, 2018, episode. Tylo said her return was "then out of the blue" and revealed that information technology was kept secret: "They had me subconscious away...I had a code name...They kept it quiet from everybody."[28]
Amusement Weekly exclusively announced on Oct 27, 2021, that the role of Taylor has been recast with Krista Allen.[29] The serial had reportedly reached out to Tylo to render, but she was unavailable.[xxx] Allen, who previously played Billie Reed on the soap opera Days of Our Lives, said: "If there was ever whatever blazon of role to come dorsum to daytime with, information technology would be this ane. I couldn't have asked for a better role to step into — or bigger shoes to fill. I love a skillful challenge."[31] Allen wore a wig when auditioning for the role, explaining that she wanted to "lock in the wait of Taylor Hayes every bit best I could", and prepared past watching Tylo'due south last episodes.[32] Allen began filming on October 28, 2021, and fabricated her commencement advent on Dec 10.[29]
Character development [edit]
Characterization [edit]
A promotional still of Taylor (Tylo) during her starting time episode in 1990.
Taylor is a globally renowned psychiatrist and works at the UCLA Medical Center.[33] When she debuted, the grapheme emerged equally the "good girl" aslope other female characters, only still had a strong demeanor.[34] Network Ten writes: "This Freudian Md always seems to lose out to Brooke when it comes to matters of the heart. Taylor is as sophisticated and intelligent every bit they come, ever able to clarify the problems of others, and sometimes even her own."[35] The writers wanted Taylor to retain a "pristine" and "well-mannered" personality, co-ordinate to Tylo, to contrast her from rival Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) who was "feisty and reckless", the different facets which attracted Ridge to each of them.[36] However, Tylo criticized a storyline in 2000 where Ridge is tricked into sleeping with his mentally unstable high school lover Morgan DeWitt (Sarah G. Buxton), who becomes significant with his child.[18] She said: "I but wish that Taylor would get a clue, menstruation! I wish that her psychiatric expertise would kick in already. I mean, she's retarded!", also observing that the grapheme can be absentminded.[37]
In the years following Taylor'southward 2005 render, her storylines changed significantly. Afterwards Ridge leaves Taylor, she becomes depressed and struggles with alcoholism. Tylo explained how this afflicted the character: "The love of her life throws her away after she struggled so hard to come back to him. Information technology was painful and humiliating. That made her more than existent and now, subsequently everything she's been through, Taylor gets to be a little manipulative spiteful and fifty-fifty resentful."[36] Taylor, who is usually resilient, falls into a tailspin: accidentally killing Darla Forrester (Schae Harrison) in a striking and run accident and lying well-nigh it, afterward being arrested for driving nether the influence. Tylo confessed, "These were the kinds of stories I was begging for", as she thought "it was very conceivable".[36] The actress likewise wanted to portray Taylor as less "serious".[36]
"In many ways, when she is not beingness kidnapped and chained to a stair railing, or trapped in a motel in sub-zero temperatures, about to dice, she is the most sane person on the testify. She is a very fun graphic symbol to play. They took her off her saintly pedestal. She is less self-sacrificing, which was normally to her detriment."
Tylo on Taylor's development (2007)[38]
Taylor oft loses out to Brooke, every bit Thorne (Ridge's brother) loses out to Ridge.[39] When asked in 2011 where she would like her storyline to go, Tylo said: "I recall we should see Thorne and Taylor go stiff and stand up to these people who mowed them down."[39] In March 2012, Tylo said that Taylor is finally learning to pursue what she wants instead of ever putting others start. She said, "In psychology, they tell you lot to be true to yourself. Maybe she is finally doing that, even though in her moral compass she knows that it is better to put other people first. She has been going later what she wants instead. Information technology is a very proficient growing place for Taylor to go dorsum to reality and realize that she is not perfect and that she needs to try not looking and then perfect and so much."[40]
Between 2014 and 2018, the character was off-screen, said to be living in Paris, where Tylo felt that she was "declining", noting: "I think with all she's been through, she would probably have no choice but to deteriorate."[41] Reflecting on Taylor beingness revealed as Bill Spencer Jr.'due south (Don Diamont) shooter, Tylo loved "the idea of a crazy psychiatrist", "I've always said that Taylor is the good doc who tin't take her medicine; that'southward how I've always described her, and this story just gives her so many things to do."[41]
Relationships [edit]
Ridge Forrester [edit]
Taylor (Tylo) and Ridge (Moss) on their wedding twenty-four hours (1992).[42]
Taylor's major beloved interest is Ridge Forrester (Ronn Moss). The couple faces challenges at first, such as interference from their respective exes, Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Blake Hayes (Peter Brown),[43] and Ridge's mother, Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery), initially disliking Taylor.[44] Past July 1991, John Goudas of The Gadsden Times wrote that Taylor was "hooked" by Ridge just was "no-nonsense". Taylor refuses to marry Ridge unless he was serious about the end of his relationship with Brooke; Goudas noted that Taylor wanted "insurance" and accounted her "upfront" approach equally the "polar opposite" to that of Brooke.[34] Ridge and Taylor ultimately ally in 1992. The actors were under pressure during the shooting of the wedding as it was filmed on the day of the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.[42]
The love triangle betwixt Taylor, Ridge and Brooke continued into Ridge and Taylor'southward first marriage. When Brooke has Ridge'southward child, Bridget Forrester (Ashley Jones), Taylor helps raise the infant[5] (although it was later revealed in 1996 that Bridget was fathered by Ridge'southward male parent Eric, not him).[45] [46] Speaking on Ridge's decision to remain married to Taylor, Tylo said that the actors were "so sick of this triangle" and revealed: "One of the things Bradley'southward going to do is accept Ridge pick Taylor over Brooke. For a change, instead of women breaking couples upwardly or getting pregnant to trap a human, we're going to run into how couples piece of work through their problems."[v] After Taylor is presumed expressionless in a plane crash in 1994 only to return months later, Tylo felt that Taylor would be feeling "quite cheated" by Ridge marrying Brooke, and joked that "Taylor wasn't even cold yet".[8] Ridge and Taylor divorce, although soon become involved once more, and get back together when Ridge finds out that he fathered Taylor's son, Thomas Forrester (Adam Gregory).[47] Ridge and Taylor remarry on June 24, 1998.[48]
Despite Ridge and Taylor's remarriage, Brooke continues her attempts at winning Ridge dorsum. Stephanie encourages Taylor to see Brooke's intent, with Tylo observing: "It was so obvious she was going later on Ridge. How tin can you explicate away that she always kept ending up in the elevator in her bra and underwear over and over once again? Stephanie'south whole mission was to go Taylor to aroma the coffee and [realize] that not everybody has as donating an agenda every bit she does."[40] Ridge and Taylor's twins, Stephanie ("Steffy") and Phoebe, are born in 1999. During the pregnancy Taylor experiences tuberculosis afterwards interacting with a homo who has it.[49] [50] Her pregnancy becomes high gamble and she refuses handling to protect the babies.[51] [52] [53] Tylo said that this was "a great way to bring awareness about the disease and the threat it poses to pregnant women".[iv]
When Taylor dies in 2002, supervising producer Rhonda Friedman noted that Ridge refuses to have the "horrible reality", saying: "He begs Taylor to come up back to him. He merely doesn't want to let go of this woman who he has loved for so many years, someone he say himself growing former with." Devin Owens of Soap Opera Assimilate chosen Taylor Ridge'southward soulmate.[54] Taylor's "ghost" visits Ridge in 2004 and encourages him to exist with Brooke.[55] Following Taylor's return to the show, her matrimony to Ridge barbarous autonomously in 2006 and they divorce. They have since reunited on several occasions simply he continues going back to Brooke, despite Taylor'due south efforts to thwart this from happening.[56] [57] Daytime Confidential's Jamey Giddens noted that Steffy and Thomas "grew upward watching their daddy basically climb out of their mom's bed and right into the sack with Rick (Jacob Immature) and Hope's (Kimberly Matula) mom, over and over once more."[58]
Other relationships [edit]
Taylor has been romantically linked to Ridge's one-half-brother Thorne (Winsor Harmon) multiple times. They were briefly involved from 1997 to 1998, when Ridge is in jail and urges Taylor to forget well-nigh him.[59] Taylor also briefly lies nigh Thorne being Thomas' male parent.[60] [61] After accidentally killing Thorne'south wife Darla in 2006, Taylor falls in beloved with Thorne, who is "forgiving and loving" towards her, even helping her nourish AA. They nearly marry, but dissever due to his then 4-year-old girl Alexandria Forrester learning that Taylor killed Darla.[36] Of working with Tylo, Harmon said, "I am so comfortable with Hunter. We accept that [comfort] around each other, and when that happens as an artist, you are immune to open up more and in that location is more spontaneity."[39]
Thorne and Taylor later become involved again in 2011, when they team upward against the Forresters for mistreating them. Tylo said: "[Taylor] probably every bit feels that Thorne deserves to have a shot at Forrester in the driver'southward seat. Taylor does not like the way Brooke has been running everything through Ridge."[39] However, Tylo saw that in that location was a "sticky indicate" betwixt them because of Darla, and noted that Taylor "would practice anything to brand up for that".[39] The actress said, "I recall it'due south very cool that there is so much history backside the two characters. First of all, it does not seem like a sexually based human relationship. And so I retrieve the audience can appreciate it and go, 'Wow. I can empathise these ii emotionally bonding,' and and so let it abound into something that doesn't look forced."[39]
In 2008, Taylor becomes involved with Brooke's son, the much younger Rick Forrester (Kyle Lowder), who was previously in a human relationship with Phoebe. Lowder described playing the storyline as "challenging" and 1 that "stirs the pot". It began after Tylo and Lowder were tested for chemistry in scenes.[62] When the news of Rick and Taylor becoming closer reaches Brooke and Ridge, they both protest against information technology; Tylo described this as "2 pots calling the kettle blackness". Brooke accuses Taylor of beingness with Rick as a grade of revenge against her, and enlists Phoebe'southward assistance in stopping the relationship. Tylo told Soap Opera Digest that Taylor'due south revenge is "a subconscious affair", explaining: "Taylor sort of feels like Brooke stole her child, then this is kind of retribution. Taylor is like, 'Well then I'll take your kid'." Phoebe accepts Rick and Taylor being together, wanting both of them to be happy and giving Taylor the "green light she was looking for".[63] Lowder believed that the tables were turning on Brooke, and said "now Brooke'southward son is in love with [Taylor], and she's in love with him – and it'south legit (...) Taylor wins, Brooke loses – and Brooke's going crazy".[64] Rick and Taylor get engaged[65] but she ends the relationship due to her feelings for Ridge.[57]
Taylor becomes involved with Whipple "Whip" Jones III (Rick Hearst) through internet dating, in 2009. Tommy Garret of Canyon News said that Whip and Taylor's "chemistry is magnificent".[66] Whip was previously involved with Brooke; Garret wrote: "Now he's in dearest with Brooke's mortal enemy Taylor Hayes Forrester... Hearst is magnificently suited for the role and fans want to see Whip and Taylor observe happiness. At least for a few months."[66] Of their romance, Tylo said: "I think Taylor has found true beloved with Whip. I recollect if she was a smart psychiatrist, and able to apply her knowledge in her own world, she would be with Whip. She would know this is a healthy human relationship. Only Taylor doesn't see it. She still wants to gear up people."[xl] Taylor and Whip ally in April 2010.[67] Whip becomes jealous when Taylor admits to Stephanie that she still has feelings for Ridge.[68] Whip's frustration with Taylor's feelings for Ridge leads to the demise of their relationship the following twelvemonth, and they end the marriage.[69]
Rivalry with Brooke [edit]
First in 1990, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Taylor would fight over Ridge'south affection for years.[70] In 2013, Tylo revealed that she and Lang would distance themselves from each other to make their on-screen rivalry convincing: "Nosotros cannot wait comfortable with each other. We need to look like nosotros are in a place of contest."[71]
In 2010, Lang and Tylo recreated a 1983 lily pond cat-fight between Krystle Carrington and Alexis Colby in the drama Dynasty, shooting the scenes in a koi pond at the CBS Studios.[72] Tommy Garrett of Canyon News said the "2 Mrs. Ridge Forresters" had escalated to "all out war".[72] Later Stephanie's death, Taylor and Brooke's animosity against ane another reignites as Taylor grows closer to Eric in 2013. Tylo said that "When Brooke and Taylor go at it, information technology actually gets a lot of people wound upwards. I said this brings the show around full circumvolve with everything Stephanie was fighting for, and now the boxing has been set for these two to really go at it."[70] In 2018, Brooke and Taylor engage in a food fight at Promise Logan's (Annika Noelle) wedding to Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton), Steffy'southward ex-husband. Tylo stated, "In the past, Taylor'south tried to play into Brooke's psychology to discover whatsoever kind of guilty witting (...) Now, Taylor realizes Brooke doesn't take one! There's no trying to go to her considering she doesn't mind to reason. Taylor's been letting stuff sit and stew for years. She'south not happy and, at present, she'due south got to vent!"[73]
Baby Jack [edit]
In 2007, Brooke and Taylor'southward rivalry intensified when Brooke begins pursuing Nick Marone (Jack Wagner) while he is married to Taylor. Soap Opera Digest noted that the women were "crossing swords again for the same man". Tylo observed that both Brooke and Taylor were being written with "more intelligence" this time effectually, and was happy in revisiting the rivalry betwixt them as "long as it wasn't over Ridge" again.[36] Taylor becomes pregnant with Nick'due south child through In vitro fertilisation (IVF), having struggled to conceive a child, and gives nascence to Jack Marone. However, because of a error that Bridget had made in the lab, it was Brooke's eggs which were implanted in Taylor and not the donor'south; making Brooke Jack's biological female parent. She fears that her infant will be drawn to Brooke.[74] Taylor begins drinking and becomes mentally unstable, with her parental rights existence taken away. The scenes where Taylor loses custody and suffers a breakdown in court were filmed shortly after Tylo's own son died. Tylo told On-Air On-Soaps: "I got a lot of emails from people worrying. They would go from worrying about me to proverb, 'Was I okay with those scenes and later on them?'" The actress said that she tapped into her own tragedy when portraying those scenes, and allowed herself to feel the "feeling that will never go away which is, 'Information technology'due south non fair'".[75] Taylor is soon awarded joint custody of Jack when she passes a mental wellness evaluation.[65] All the same, she cannot bail with him and ends up giving Jack to Brooke in the cease.[33]

Expect, we get that information technology'due south a soap opera, simply even that was a fleck much."[95] In 2008, Darren Lomas from Daytime Confidential wrote, "The back-from-death version of Taylor is a whole lot more horny than she was back in the twenty-four hour period. Is it all because she never got over Ridge, her one truthful love?"[33] Chris Eades of CBS Soaps in Depth noted that "Fans were admittedly stunned" by the "all-besides-rare surprise" of Taylor'due south 2018 return, writing: "With Steffy in desperate demand of back up, it was the perfect time for Taylor to render to town and offer her daughter some help."[96]
